The idea to create Peace in Focus emerged during a summer training on international mediation and conflict resolution, which co-founders Kate Fedosova and Kyle Dietrich attended in 2006. The training, much like our workshops, provided a forum for students and young professionals from around the world to learn creative and non-violent strategies for understanding and preventing conflict. It was through this unique setting that we began to understand and articulate a shared vision for creating visible social change.
Peace in Focus has grown to include a group of passionate individuals from around the world that have worked in youth development, peacebuilding, photography, and education. Together, we have created an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to enable younger generations of leaders in fragmented and post-conflict environments.
Given the prevalence of violent, divisive, and non-indigenous images in the media, as well as a general lack of artistic outlets in the places Peace in Focus intends to work, we chose to use photography as a tool for replacing adversarial images with a collaborative and organic vision for peace.
"Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time; the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. Mankind must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love."
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
