What's New at Peace in Focus

April, 2013
Peace in Focus has been invited to be a youth organization at the 2013 Clinton Global Initiative! By attending this event, we will have the opportunity to spread the word about our unique approach to conflict management and engage the next generation of leaders. Check out photos from the event!

April - May, 2013
We are looking forward to successfully completing our 2-year project in Mexico with our local partner organization and affiliated programs in the Caribbean. The program will culminate with an exhibit in Mexico City featuring student photography and digital narratives.

February, 2013
We will collaborate with La Poderosa Media Project, a global non-profit whose mission is to encourage empowerment, empathy, and collaboration through community-based visual arts programs in Latin America and the United States. Together, we will use our Introduction to Photography and Digital Storytelling Curriculum in a series of classes at KIPP Charter School in Austin, TX.

PIF works to awaken confidence in young people by giving them the tools to express themselves and by putting them in leadership positions. Far too often, the images and stories that direct their lives and influence their ideas are constructed by outsiders, elites and older people. To address this issue, this year PIF partnered with Mercy Corps and Rizon Media to produce a locally-made educational television program for kids Timoun Alez (“Comfort for Kids”). It is the only show of its kind in Haiti – filmed in Creole, created for and with the help of our youth. The show aired in May for eight weeks on the government-owned national TV network and was rebroadcasted throughout the summer reaching tens of thousands of viewers each weekend morning. It was also distributed as DVDs to schools and community organizations.

February 2012
February, we partnered with Mercy Corps and National Geographic in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to give a workshop to Mercy Corps’ Youth Leadership Council. They created photo-essays exploring the topics of the environmenttransportation, and education

April - July, 2012
In April, PIF partnered with ACEDONE in Boston for a new workshop, where our youth created photo-essays about masculinitynon-violence, and the history of Roxbury. In July, the participants created digital narratives on the topics of  stereotypes of Africathe lost history of Somaliageneration gaps within the community, and challenges that immigrants face. We celebrated with them as they showed their community their projects at the opening at the Madaal Center in July.

May, 2012
"I AM: An Exploration of Identity, Community and Homecoming" showcased and celebrated photos taken by young photographers in our programs in Boston, Burundi, Liberia, and the Caribbean – giving us a window into their lives, struggles, and dreams as the present generation of leaders. This exhibit was featured at United South End Settlements, Ula Café, and Boston City Hall.

June - August, 2012
Throughout the months of June, July, and August PIF led a three-part workshop in collaboration with our local partner organization in Mexico City and affiliated projects in the Caribbean. The participants created personal profiles, photo-essays on role models in their communities, and each produced a digital narrative combining words, sound and images on a community issue of their choice.
